The Miami Ichimura Japanese Garden Lester Pancoast's last big project was the design of the new Japanese Garden in Miami. He created a garden according to Japanese principles of designs using tropical plants. The Garden is located on Watson Island, adjacent to Jungle Island. When Lester died in November, 2003, the garden was still under construction. Fortunately, his nephew, Thorn Grafton, an architect who was collaborating with Lester on this project, was able to take over the job and see it to completion. We were also lucky indeed to have the work progress under the capable direction of Miami City Project Manager Meredith Nation. Due to budget constraints, a number of the features of the garden were not
completed by the opening. The ceremonial tea house, and the events
pavilion are some of the items not
completed. A memorial fund was established in Lester's name by
the Dade County Community Foundation. Donors to this worthy project are
welcome. Please contact Joe Pena at the Foundation, 305-371-2711.
